ReplyDeletePoem: “Trees”
Question: Identify 2 examples of personification in the poem and discuss what ideas about trees/nature that personification conveys
Two examples of personification in the poem “Trees” by Joyce Kilmer include; “A tree that may in summer wear A nest of robins in her hair.” I think that the poet includes that the tree “wears” a nest of robins to reinforce that trees are simple, yet beautiful things. This also supports the inference that the pronoun “her” is referring to Mother Nature. Another example of personification is: “Upon whose bosom snow has lain; Who intimately lives with rain.” Kilmer is portraying snow on a tree as an intimate relationship between two beings. Overall this poem is conveying that while most people consider poetry lovely; poetry is nothing compared to the simple elegance of a tree. Furthermore, in the last stanza: “Poems are made by fools like me, but only God can make a tree” the central idea, that trees are beautiful things, is reinforced with the truth that only a higher power can create trees.

The poem “Trees”, by Joyce Kilmer, suggests that even though humans can't create simple/ natural things in life, such as a tree, we can still embrace them and appreciate them for what they are. After we read “I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree”, we can infer that Kilmer is trying to get across that humans do not have the ability to make anything as “lovely” as a tree, or anything else from nature, since it can only be made by God himself. Also, even though people can write about something natural, it doesn't compare to experiencing that certain aspect in real life. In addition to this, when Kilmer states, “Poems are made by fools like me, but only God can make a tree”, it connects back to the theme that only God has the power to make natural aspects of life exist. When saying the poems are made by “fools” like her, she is really trying emphasize how it would be meaningless to write about something that we don't fully appreciate . The whole poem suggests that the more we grow as people, we start to understand the importance of the simplicities of life.

ReplyDeleteThe poem " Trees" written by Joyce Kilmer, Is expressing that the simple things from nature such as trees bring beauty and peace to our world and although we might not have a deeper thought or even pay attention we should appreciate and take care of the beauty of our nature. I believe that the reason the author of this poem included god in the poem is because he wants to compare god to nature in the sense that for most people god brings hope and peacefulness something that nature also brings to is in a more naturalistic way. " A tree that looks at God all day" in that quote I believe that the author means that because the trees are so high up they are being lightened up but the rays of the sun that bring a focus to them as it were god shining through the trees.
Question 1
ReplyDeleteIn the poem Trees by Joyce Kilmer, nature is conveyed by being non judgemental. I came to this idea because no matter what the elements, the tree is accepting. For example, "a. Tree that may in summer wear A nest of robins in her hair" doesn't really care how she looks. Therefore, the tree is not vain. Also, A tree that looks at God all day and lifts her leafy arms to pray" means that no matter how one looks, he/she can open themselves up to prayer.
2. Identify 2 examples of personification in the poem and discuss what ideas about trees/nature that personification conveys.
ReplyDelete"A tree whose hungry mouth is prest against the sweet earths flowing breast...". This quote is referring a tree and earth to a baby and a mother, the mother feeding the child nutrients to grow and be strong just like the earth giving the tree nutrients to grow and be big/strong. Another use of personification is when the author states "a tree that may in summer wear a nest of robins in her hair". This is showing the mother to child analogy yet again, the tree is the mother role while it is providing hospitality to the robins or the children in this scenario.
Identify 2 examples of personification in the poem and discuss what ideas about trees/nature that personification conveys.
ReplyDeleteIn the poem “Trees”, by Joyce Kilmer, the most common poetic device used in this poem is personification, yet there’s two that really identify the writer’s thoughts of nature. One example of personification is, “A tree that looks at God all day”, which gives the tree the human capability of being able to “look” at its surroundings. The tree “looks at God” specifically, which suggests that trees and nature in generally are transcendent and spiritual. The idea of “God” gives off a holy presence of a divine power, therefore by mentioning that the tree looks to “God” suggests that trees and nature should be treated like they are divine and sacred forms, with similar respect to that of our own God. As well, another personified statement in the poem is that the tree, “may in summer wear a nest of robins in her hair”. The tree “wears” the nest of robins means that the tree homes the lives of robins which live and depend on the tree given that they’ve established their nest/home in the tree. This depicts how in nature life is created and nourished like that of the robins living in the tree, and nature is a place that is a home to all types of life. Just how we look to our environment and daily lives as a community and home, nature provides that for many living beings within it. Nature is a home, a home which is both spiritual and deserving of respect.

Question 1. What ideas about nature are conveyed in this poem? Choose an idea and explain how you came to that idea. Use quotes in your response.
ReplyDeleteIn the poem "Trees" by Joyce Kilmer there are many examples of nature. In the second stanza it says, "A tree whose mouth is prest against the sweet earth's flowing breast." This implies that trees feed on the earth like a newborn baby feeds on a mothers breast. Trees are like children and the earth is the mother. In the third stanza it says, "A tree looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray." This is saying that trees stay up all day and pray because there arms, which are tree branches, are always up and never puts them down.
2. Identify 2 examples of personification in the poem and discuss what ideas about trees/nature that personification conveys.
ReplyDeleteIn the poem, “Trees”, by Joyce Kilmer, the author uses personification to give the tree human like traits. Giving human traits to human things helps the reader understand the basic characteristics of the tree. “A tree whose hungry mouth is prest against the sweet earth’s flowing breast”. Saying that the tree has a mouth, is giving it a human body part, which helps the reader understand it’s hunger for the “sweet earth”. The author also describes the tree as “lifting her leafy arms to pray”. This helps the reader visualize the tree standing tall “looking at God all day” and using her branches as a way to pray. Adding personification to a poem, such as Trees, gives the reader a chance to fully visualize how alive the tree really is.

In the poem “Trees”, by Joyce Kilmer, the author conveys the connection between God and his creations, in a form of a tree. He praises God’s power and ability to create such magnificent objects that outshines the other elements on this planet. The quote in line 6, “And lifts her heavy arms to pray,” represents a tree as a woman, who prays to God for creating such an enticement for the world to ponder. Furthermore, this poem reveals that the beauty is outside the tree, but the roots are what give it the power. The author illustrates that nature which has been created by God himself, is incomparable to other manmade objects. It can be inferred the poet is very religious and strongly believes in a supernatural entity known as God. Ultimately, the poem depicts nature is very powerful and enticing due to being a direct creation of God.
