The New Colossus
ReplyDeleteBy Emma Lazarus
Choose 2 or 3 words in the poem, discuss their connotations, and then explain how those words contribute to the poem's meaning.
Yearning- According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, yearning means "a tender or urgent longing" in other words it means to desire something very much. This word reveals how bad people wanted to come to America no matter how poor are tired they were because they weren't going to stop until they made it to America.
Mighty- Although The word Mighty just means to have power or to be in control of power, it adds a bigger meaning to the poem. The sentence the word mighty is used in shows this,
" A mighty woman with a torch" and now if you took away the word "mighty" the sentence dramatically lacks purpose. When you take the word mighty out you lose interpretation on who this woman with a torch is and you just think of the average person, but by adding the word mighty we can visualize a woman who is strong and takes leadership.
Conquering - A basic definition of the word conquering is to over come and take control. In this poem, it shows that they had total power and they dominated what they could.
ReplyDeleteBrazen- The definition of brazen is to be bold and without shame. By using the word brazen it reveals the deeper mean behind the Statue of Liberty and how it stands for freedom and opportunity.
Golden- the official defining of golden is consisting of, relating to, or containing gold. When you think of gold you think of wealth, opportunity, and prosperity. The choice of this word emphasizes the opportunity that new immigrants to America have. America can give prosperity, wealth, and happiness. "I lift my lamp beside the golden door" loses its meaning when you take golden out. It loses the message that prosperity awaits those who enter the door, enter America.
ReplyDeleteExiles- the definition of exiles is the state or a period of forced absence from one's country or home or the state or a period of voluntary absence from one's country or home. Both of these definitions suggest a search
for a new home,a new life, and new opportunities. The word exiles suggests that they are unwelcome at home. This tells us America receives and accepts all. “Mother of exiles” Emphasises that all are welcome through the golden door into America.
