"Fog" (p.8)
1. What does this poem convey about the urban landscape?
2. What is the extended metaphor in the poem, and what does it suggest about the fog?
Carl Sandburg made the poetic decision to include an extended metaphor throughout the poem. He starts off his writing with the sentence, “The fog comes on little cat feet.” The author made the choice to use the word “little” as a very important diction choice to represent the speed of the fog. This metaphor emphasizes that fact that the fog is moving slowly because a cat with little feet won’t get to its certain destination very fast. In addition, Carl Sandburg’s choice to pick the comparison to be of a cat instead of an elephant suggests that the poet wanted an animal that would fit the "little" concept. Furthermore, the slow movement of the fog shows us that it is going to last long in the area thereby it will take some time for it to disappear. This could potentially be dangerous to the community living where the fog is taking place because a fog causes people to see unclearly whether they are driving or roaming around on foot. The slow movement of the fog also allows us to create a mental image in our minds through the use of imagery to help us understand the poem even more. All in all, the metaphor is a strong comparison giving us a better understanding about the fog.
2. What is the extended metaphor in the poem, and what does it suggest about the fog?
Carl Sandburg in his poem named “Fog” describes to us the thick, yet silent cloud that covers the city and the harbor. He portrays it mysterious as well as quiet by comparing it to the cat. Sandburg shows his metaphor by writing “ The fog comes on a little cat feet”. Cats, even though predators, never fully tained, move like a shadow. Even more silent than a wind, they move low, close to the ground, walking on their feet without making any sound. This is how the author wants us to see the fog, the fog that is like a deadly yet soundless predator slowly walking from city to city. Sandburg extends his metaphor even further “It sits looking over the harbor and city on silent haunches and then moves on.” Yet again the fog becomes the cat, but this time it has found its target. However, it does not violently attack it, instead, it just sits there, covering the harbor with dead silence and mystery. Then, it moves on, as quietly as it came, to look for its next prey.

Carl Sandberg doesn't stop there as he never states that the fog is violent at all even though is has so much power. Instead he states that the fog just moves silently across the flat urban landscape .

The way the author emphasizes the importance of the harbor for the landscape is by stating “on silent haunches” haunches are the arches of the bridges that are surrounded by the harbor thus stating the fog is consuming the architecture in the harbor and by that the fog brings the attention of architecture within the city harbor. People only build bridges and architecture in the harbors of their city if the harbor is important for many things like trade or important boats and these are all things the fog comes and looks over before it leaves. Not only is the harbor emphasized in the poem but also the quietness of the city in the morning because fog normally comes in the morning from the harbor and by city silently on the haunches the author is showing the fog is being undisturbed by any activity and that is stating that the city is quiet in the morning until the fog leaves then the city awakens and people move throughout the city.

Nothing will stay forever so sometimes you have to take a moment to take it all in.
Fog by Carl Sandburg is a small but very insightful poem. There was not a lot that was mentioned about the landscape and all that we know is that there is a harbor overlooking the city. I think that the landscape is very placid and calm. This can be inferred by looking at these lines: "It sits looking over harbor and city on silent haunches". This shows that the fog manages to make everything seem very peaceful. The poet's diction is also very important because this helps us paint a picture in our minds of a beautiful, foggy morning where the fog is not the slightest bit affected by any activities happening around but it just sits there for some time and then moves on without a noise.
