"Death of the Ball Turret Gunner" (p.19)
1. What do you think "State" in line 1 means? Explain your answer and how it fits in with the rest of the poem.
2. How is this poem about the loss of individuality?
Question 2 ) in the poem "the death of a ball gunner" by Randal jarred there is a strong meesage of the loss of individuality. It is shown by the line "they washed me out of the turret with a hose". After he has died they just find a new replacement. All, he ever was was a clog in the machine. He was washed out like not even a person. He became just another number in the casualty list. The similar is that something you wash out with a hose is insignificant and worthless, while human life has the highest value. The whole poems message about the loss of individuality is that at war all inviduality is gone, your just a cog in a machine that can easily be replaced and forgotten about.

This poem is about how when you are in war you can't just escape it when your in a gory situation so to bare through all of it you have to get back to your comfort zone. Jarrell also begins the poem talking about his mother and being in the womb when a persons life was so easy and simple. This also comes together with to show how "state" is his comfort zone.
