"Prospective Immigrants Please Note" (p.23)
What do you think "this door" is? Explain and support your answer.
In the poem "Perspective of immigrants please note” by Adrienne Rich the persona is referring "the door" to a gateway to opportunity, it portrays the American dream. It is easy to connect the door to the gateway to opportunity because in the title the author uses the word immigrant therefore is referring to someone migrating to a different country. This reveals that this person is most likely traveling to America in order for a new opportunity for a better life in the poem it states “the door itself makes no promises, it is only a door” this is representing that the chance for opportunity is not 100%, the author is saying that even if you go through the door you still may not be guaranteed a better life. The persona was able to compare these two components because a door represent something that you walk through and if you make the choice to walk through this thing it can change your life this determines that the door in the poem is relating to the door to opportunity or in other words the American dream.
In the poem "Prospective immigrants please note" by Adrienne Rich the reference of the door is a symbol of freedom. But it also is connected to a big decision since the author mentions immigrants it connects to the there previous life mainly because before they go through that door they have decide weather or not it's worth it or it's a fake opportunity that seems great. When people think of a door they think of oh it's just an object that's closing off everything that's within so to these immigrants this door could either be good or bad. -Emily Cornwall
In the poem "prospective immigrants please note" the door is a symbol of freedom AND future. , representing that there is always two ways; a good and a bad. There is always a a choice, a good one or bad one. If you make poor choices your life can go wrong, you want to be able to "live worthily" and look back on your life in a positive manner. Have a positive attitude and continue on with it, you can be blinded but you can die bravely. Behind that door is your future and your freedom based off of the decisions and choices you make.
In the poem, “ Prospective Immigrants Please Note”, by Adrienne Rich is giving a choice for immigrant to pass a “door”. I think her door symbolize the freedom and adventure which enchanted immigrant’s curiosity to go across the border of United States. This door does not exist in real life as there is no visible border line between each country. As poetry describes, “Either you will go through this door or you will not go through”, immigrants have freedom to make own decision; either to radically explore new world or to conservatively keep themselves into a safe shell. Although there is critical risk and drawback for either of decision, some immigrants would choose to take once in a lifetime opportunity to seek an American dream. I think this “door” also represent immigrants feeling and expression about immigration. For example, a word “door” contains immigrant’s anticipation and excitement toward unimaginable fantasy utopia, however, it also conveys anxiety and vulnerableness because they cannot see what is on the other side until they open. However, author concluded her poetry by advising that , “The door itself makes no promises. It is only a door”. Although door represent invisible border and gate for new world, she suggested that door in real life is just an object for people’s pathway and it cannot chose your future.
The door in the poem is a symbol of opportunity for immigrants that are coming to America. When immigrants come to America they really don't know what to expect or what are going to get themselves into. They only go hoping that they will get to have a better life. The poem states "hold your position to die bravely" people leave there country and they put there own life on the line to hopefully have an opportunity.
In the poem, "Prospective Immigrants Please Note", by Adrienne Rich, describing a "door" as a gateway to a better life and more opportunities for immigrants. No one knows what may hold behind this door or how easy or difficult the path to it may be, but at the end, it's only a door. The poem states, "How much will blind you, much will evade you at what cost". By going through the door, there are no promises and it's a big risk, but many will have to sacrifice things to have a better life.
In the poem “Prospective Immigrants Please Note,” by Adrienne Rich, the door is a metaphor which compares it [the door] to the borders of the country. Individuals that decide to go through that door always have chances to regret their decisions of doing so. Immigrants might have difficulties joining a new culture, and local people might look at them doubly and with doubts. On the other hand, the author suggests that immigrants do not have to go through that door, and stay in their homeland. They can maintain their values, keep their social position, and “die bravely” in their country. However, at the end, Rich emphasizes that neither of the choices guarantee anything. A new homeland cannot promise a good life, and with every choice comes a risk.
